Department of Urology
Urology Residency Training Program
Director's Message
Thank you for your interest in our Urology Residency Training Program!
The University Of Florida Department Of Urology has undergone significant advances since its inception as a division of the Department of Surgery in 1958. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2008, we usher in an era of significant expansion as our one-time division status has transitioned to a full department. With this change our full time faculty complement has increased with subspecialty expertise in oncology, endourology, laparoscopy, robotics, infertility, stone disease, erectile dysfunction, and prosthetics. We anticipate further expansion with the addition of an urogynocologist and further strengthening of our ties to Nemours Pediatric Urology.
While still a division of urology, the University of Florida has been consistently recognized by US News and World Reports as one of the top programs in the United States. We are confident that our departmental expansion will continue to advance our national status. We recognize and affirm the value of an excellent residency program as part of this process. Our faculty is committed to training our residents in an environment that is progressive, pioneering and founded in a tradition of evidence based medicine and life long learning. We see our obligation to not only teach, but to mentor in an environment of mutual respect between faculty and resident. We are proud to recognize our residents as excellent clinicians and leaders in their communities, pursuing both clinical and academic careers.
As we continue to evolve and expand as a department and training program we are strategically positioned to create new and innovative changes under American Board of Urology and ACEME outcomes project guidelines. We anticipate the beginning of a new curriculum anticipating the needs to the future urologist with a greater emphasis on learning and progression based more on competency than on clinical volume alone. In 2008, beginning in the PGY-1 year residents education will be based on the perceived needs of a future urologist with opportunities for competency based training and advancement based on evaluation and performance.
Want to join us? Application to the Department of Urology is through the electronic resident application system (ERAS). We complete our review of applications by the end of October in anticipation of inviting selected applicants for interviews usually in late November and early to mid December. We participate in the American Urological Association match and candidates are carefully chosen from this applicant pool. We currently accept two candidates at the PGY-1 entry level. These individuals are assured a position in the National Resident Matching Program.
Want to spend some time with us? Opportunities exist for summer medical student research activities. Senior student electives are available throughout the year, but are frequently well subscribed during the months of September through November because of the match. Consider spending some time with us so we can get to know each other.
Hopefully the additional online information will help answer some of your specific questions. If not, please contact us. We would be most happy to answer questions about what we feel is a great residency program. Please contact Ms. Shelly Burleson, Residency Program Coordinator, at 352-273-7647 or shelly.burleson@urology.ufl.edu.
Thanks again for your interest and good luck in your future choice of careers.
Sincerely,
Marc S. Cohen, M.D., F.A.C.S.
