The Wayne and Marti Huizenga Eminent Scholar Chair in Urology: Dr. Vieweg

Dr. Johannes ViewegDr. Johannes Vieweg, professor and founding chair of theDepartment of Urology, has been named the Wayne and Marti Huizenga Eminent Scholar Chair in Urology. Dr. Vieweg is recognized by this honor for his outstanding contributions in (the development of) biological therapies for prostate cancer.  As an internationally-recognized researcher in urologic oncology,  his work will continue to serve as a cornerstone for the latest venture of UF, Shands, and the Moffitt Cancer Center as we initiate a new collaborative program in genitourinary malignancies.  

Dr. Vieweg’s vision for the Department of Urology extends beyond his own research interests.  He is also committed to improving patient care and in urology education. .  Additionally, under his stewardship, the department has also implemented a clinical quality and outcomes management program, expanded the residency program, and created critical fellowships in minimally invasive surgery, genitourinary cancer, and female and reconstructive urology.

The President of UroGators Alumni Society: Dr. Tom Stringer

UroGatorsDr. Tom Stringer was elected president of the newly-formed Department of Urology Alumni Society, the UroGators, unanimously in a special gathering of former residents, fellows and faculty in January this year.  Dr. Stringer, an alumnus and urologist with Citrus Urology Associates, will work closely with the chair of the department, Dr. Johannes Vieweg, to accomplish the organization's primary objectives: 1) to provide a forum for former residents, fellows and faculty to interact, socialize and exchange information; 2) to support the mission and critical needs of the department; 3) to provide advocacy and education for patients with urologic disease; and 4) to establish an interactive network among university faculty and community urologists and their patients throughout Florida and the Southeast. With this new leadership, UroGator Alumni Society shall kickstart the year with a series of events including the May 2008 AUA meeting and special reception in Orlando. 2008 Superior Accomplishment Award from the University of Florida: Dr. Algood

Dr. Chester AlgoodDr. Chester Algood, clinical assistant professor, was recently awarded the prestigious 2008 Superior Accomplishment Division 5 Award in the category of academic personnel. This program recognizes staff members who contribute outstanding and meritorious service, efficiency and/or economy or to the quality of life provided to students and employees. Dr. Algood's division-level award moves him forward to compete at the University-level, which offers eight $1,000 and six $2,000 cash awards to recipients.

First Prize in the 2008 AUA/Gyrus ACMI Prize Essay Contest: Dr. Canales

Dr. Benjamin CanalesDr. Benjamin Canales, assistant professor, was recently awarded first prize in the 2008 AUA/Gyrus ACMI Prize Essay contest for his article entitled, "Comprehensive Proteomic Analysis of Human Calcium Oxalate Monohydrate Kidney Stone Matrix". The essay contest was created to encourage urologists and residents in training to share their learning with fellow urologists and carries a monetary prize of $1,500 provided by Gyrus ACMI. Dr. Canales will be invited to present his research at the 2008 American Urological Association meeting in Orlando. This is the second award that Dr. Canales and his team have received for their research. Previously, they were awarded 2nd place in the annual Endourological Society essay contest.  

First Evidence-Based Medicine Authorship for the Field of Urology: Dr. Dahm

Dr. Philipp DahmDr. Philipp Dahm, assistant professor, and Dr. Roger Dmochowski (Vanderbilt University) will be co-editing a book, "Evidence-Based Urology" by BMJ Books. The publication shall provide evidence-based answers to clinical questions in urology. Dr. Dahm is considered one of the nation's foremost scholars of EBM in the field of urology.

 

 

Drs. Yeung, Vieweg, Kahn, Newman and Dahm Author Article Celebrating the Contributions of Dr. Birdwell Finlayson

Drs. Larry Yeung, Johannes Vieweg, Saeed Khan, Robert Newman and Philipp Dahm from the departments of urology, pathology, immunology and laboratory medicine at the University of Florida have written an article celebrating the contributions of Dr. Birdwell Finlayson for the March 2008 issue of The Journal of Urology. Dr. Finlayson was an internationally renowned surgeon and stone disease expert and a member of the UF department of urology faculty from 1967 until his untimely death in 1988.

2008 T. Leon Howard Pyelogram Hour First Prize: Dr. Nikki Le

Dr. Nikki Le, a third-year urology resident, was recently awarded first place in the 2008 T. Leon Howard Pyelogram Hour for her presentation on Renal Mucormycosis.  Dr. Le was the most junior of eight competitors presenting at this year's SESAUA conference in San Diego.  The T. Leon Howard Pyelogram Hour is a longstanding tradition shared among the various sections of the AUA.  Dr. Marc S. Cohen, professor of urology, a previous T. Leon Howard Pyelogram winner, served as her mentor throughout the process.  This is Dr. Le's second pyelogram competition award, the first one being the Wise Ol' Owl Pyelogram Hour at the 2007 Florida Urological Society meeting in Miami, FL.  She will receive a monetary prize of $500 as well as a commemorative plaque.

Department of Urology Hosts First CME Event in Urology Seminar Series

CME Event in Urology Seminar SeriesOn Saturday, January 26th, the Department of Urology hosted its first CME event in the UF Urology Seminar Series, Advances in Urologic Oncology.  Held at the University of Florida Hilton Hotel and Conference Center, the 5 CME credit event was attended by nearly 50 urologists. Keynote speaker, Dr. Joel Sheinfeld of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, delivered a dynamic presentation on his innovative work with the management of testicular carcinoma. The department looks forward to hosting its second CME event in October this year in conjunction with their 50th Anniversary Celebration. April 2008: 2nd Annual UF Urology Research Retreat

Please join us for our second annual UF Urology Research Retreat to be held at the UF Cancer and Genetics Research Center. This year's event will encourage dialogue and focused discussion on the following key themes: a) genitourinary oncology/ tumor immunology; b) angiogenesis and cancer modulators; c) urolithiasis; d) outcomes and health policies; e) and stem cell therapies. May 17-22, 2008: American Urological Association Annual Meeting & UF Reception

In conjunction with the AUA's annual meeting being held in Orlando, Florida, the Department of Urology and the UroGators Alumni society will host a special reception on Monday, May 19th at The Peabody Hotel. More information will be available closer to the event. We hope to see you there!

October 3-4, 2008: Urology – Celebrating 50 Years

UF Urology will celebrate its 50th anniversary at Shands and the University of Florida in October of 2008. Plans are underway for an exciting weekend of events including a CME event, some rest and relaxation in sports and family activities, and an exclusive gala dinner on Saturday, October 4th at Emerson Alumni Hall.
